Our yard is on Ophir Road
American River Gas started in propane with Don Veninga in 1966. Steve Veninga and Bobby Dal Porto bought the company in 1996 and run it from Ophir Road today. When you call (530) 888-7438 on a weekday, you reach the office here, 8:00 to 4:30, closed noon to 1:00. After hours an answering service reaches our staff.
Ophir itself has a long story. It began in 1849 as a gold camp and, according to the state's landmark listing, was the most populous town in Placer County in 1852 before a fire in July 1853 nearly destroyed it. It is California Historical Landmark No. 463, and today the area has a Newcastle address.

How Newcastle heats
The 95658 ZIP area counts 894 propane-heated households out of 2,241, about 40%, and only about 12% on utility gas. In the Newcastle CDP, the older town center, the propane share drops to about 21%. The pattern is the same all over the foothills: the core has gas lines, the parcels around it do not.
Newcastle grew as a Central Pacific rail town in 1864 and became known for its orchards. Many of today's propane homes are on former fruit ranches and hillside lots between I-80, Highway 193 and Ophir Road.
If your Newcastle home has no gas meter, it almost certainly has a propane tank, and the Ophir Road yard is a few minutes away.
Delivery programs for Newcastle homes
Newcastle sits where Highway 193 meets I-80, a short run from Auburn. Pick the option that fits how you use propane.
- Keep Full: automatic fills timed from temperatures and your usage.
- Order it yourself: call at about 30% on the gauge, and we usually deliver within a week on the route day.
- Budget Plan: equal monthly payments billed on the 10th, May through April.

Tank sets and gas lines
We set leased or customer-owned tanks by crane, run underground lines to the house, shop or pool heater, and pressure test everything before the first fill. For ranches and orchards we also deliver agricultural and commercial propane.
PG&E's Placer County list for the October 23, 2019 Public Safety Power Shutoff included Newcastle. Keep Full automatic delivery keeps the tank topped up, so a propane fireplace or wall heater that runs without power still has fuel.
Safety and moving in
If you smell gas, leave the building first, then call 911 and us from outside. If a tank runs out, we must leak test the system before relighting.
New to a Newcastle property? Check whether the tank is leased or owned, then call us. We check the system for leaks before the first delivery.
