A gas-line town inside a propane ZIP

Nevada City covers only about 2.2 square miles, and most homes inside it are on the PG&E main. The Census counts 175 of 1,323 city households, about 13%, heating with propane.

Step past the city limits and the picture flips. Across the 95959 ZIP area, 2,840 of 7,437 households use propane for heat, compared with about a third on utility gas. Those are the homes on the ridges, along the canyon roads and on the wooded lots spread out around town.

From the Ophir Road yard to the county seat

Our trucks leave Ophir Road, pick up Highway 49 in Auburn and head north across the Bear River into Nevada County. Through Grass Valley, Highways 49 and 20 share the Golden Center Freeway to Nevada City. There Highway 49 turns northwest toward the Yuba River, and Highway 20 heads east toward the high country.

Your delivery day depends on where you live, so call the office and we will tell you your delivery day.

Heavy rain, cold nights, snow on the hills

Nevada City sits near 2,477 feet and gets about 59 inches of rain in a typical year, a lot for California. It averages about 75 freezing nights a year. Snow rarely falls in town, but it falls heavily on the mountains above, so a place higher up can see very different weather than downtown.

Order before a cold stretch, not during it. If snow does come, clear a path from the driveway to the tank and brush off the lid. Our delivery hose reaches 120 feet.

Keep Full or order yourself

Keep Full is automatic. We time each fill from outdoor temperatures and your past use, so a cold week is less likely to catch you short. If you would rather be in charge, call when the gauge reads about 30% and we deliver on your area's route day, usually within a week. Either way works with the Budget Plan, which spreads the season's cost into equal monthly payments billed on the 10th.

Fire season and power shutoffs

In August 2020 the Jones Fire burned 705 acres off Jones Bar Road in the Yuba River drainage northwest of Nevada City and destroyed 18 structures, according to CAL FIRE. The year before, Nevada City was on PG&E's Nevada County list for the October 2019 Public Safety Power Shutoff, and PG&E estimated about 43,200 county customers would be affected. YubaNet's live log reported power back on in downtown Nevada City on October 10.

A full tank keeps a propane fireplace or wall heater running through a shutoff, and Keep Full automatic delivery keeps it topped up. Keep dry needles and brush cleared away from the tank and regulator.

Moving in, switching or adding propane

  • Buying a home with a tank: ask the seller whether it is leased or owned, then call us to open an account.
  • Switching companies: a leased tank belongs to the old supplier. We can set our own tank, and a new account gets a leak check before the first fill.
  • On city gas but want a shop heater or outdoor kitchen: we can set a small tank and run a line.
  • Moving natural gas appliances to a propane home: ask about conversions.

Cylinder refills and gas safety
