Why propane is the everyday fuel in Cool

Cool sits at about 1,530 feet on Highway 49 in El Dorado County, on the south side of the American River canyon from Auburn. Very little of the area is on a gas main. Census figures for the 95614 ZIP area show 942 of 1,596 households, about 59%, heating with propane, and only about 4% on utility gas. That is one of the highest propane shares anywhere we deliver.

So propane here is not a backup fuel. It heats the house, the water and often the shop, the barn and the pool.

Auburn Lake Trails

The gated Auburn Lake Trails community, with its 23 miles of horse trails, makes up a large share of the Cool ZIP area, and the Census counts 780 of its 1,369 households on propane. Delivery inside a gated neighborhood goes smoothly when we have what we need on file: your gate access instructions, your lot and street, and a note on where the tank sits. Our hose reaches 120 feet, so the driver can usually stay on the pavement and walk the line in to the tank.

Crossing the canyon from Newcastle

From our yard, the drive runs through Auburn and down Highway 49 across the American River canyon, then climbs into Cool, about 9 miles and 19 minutes in all. Cool is the closest of the El Dorado County towns we serve, and it sits on the way to Pilot Hill, Greenwood and Georgetown. Call the office and it will tell you your delivery day.

Keep Full on a horse property

A Cool home on acreage may also have a heated shop, a tack room or a spa, and each of those adds to propane use. That makes Keep Full a good fit. We time your fills from outdoor temperatures and your history, and you stop checking the gauge. If you would rather decide yourself, call when the gauge reads about 30% and we deliver on the route day, usually within a week. Either way, Keep Full pairs with our Budget Plan, which spreads the year's cost into equal monthly payments.

Shutoff season

Cool was named in PG&E's October 2019 Public Safety Power Shutoff plans for El Dorado County, and PG&E estimated about 51,400 El Dorado County customers would be affected by its October 2019 shutoffs. On acreage, an outage can also mean no well water. A full tank still runs a propane fireplace or wall heater with the power off, and Keep Full automatic delivery tops the tank up before fire season.

CAL FIRE maps the center of Cool in its High fire hazard zone. Keep grass mowed and brush trimmed around the tank and regulator.
