Highway 193 up to the Divide
From our Ophir Road yard, the drive crosses the American River canyon on Highway 49 to Cool, then follows Highway 193, known locally as Georgetown Road, east through Fords Corner and Greenwood to Georgetown. It is a longer drive than the towns closest to our yard, so on the Divide ordering on time pays off.
Georgetown sits at about 2,654 feet, the highest of the El Dorado County towns we serve. Winter storms at that elevation can bring snow and ice. Keep a clear path from the driveway to the tank, knock snow off the lid after a storm, and mark the tank with a tall stake so it is easy to find.

Growlersburg's wide streets and propane homes
Georgetown was founded in August 1849 and nicknamed Growlersburg for the heavy, gold-bearing quartz that miners said growled in their pockets. After a fire in 1852, the town was rebuilt upslope with a Main Street 100 feet wide.
Out of town it is a different picture: long drives, tall timber and scattered homes. The Census counts 727 of 1,684 households in the 95634 ZIP area, about 43%, heating with propane, and about 11% using utility gas. Propane runs the furnace, water heater and range for a large share of the Divide.
Keep Full makes sense up here
Because Georgetown is farther out and higher up, Keep Full is worth a look for a year-round home. We plan fills automatically from temperatures and your past use, so there is less to watch when a storm is coming. If you order your own deliveries, call when your gauge reads about 30%, and we deliver on your area's route day, usually within a week. The Budget Plan spreads the year's cost into equal monthly payments billed on the 10th.

Fire, evacuation and power
The 2022 Mosquito Fire started east of Foresthill near Mosquito Road and Oxbow Reservoir on September 6 and burned 76,788 acres across Placer and El Dorado counties. Parts of Georgetown were evacuated; all orders were lifted by September 21, 2022. CAL FIRE maps the area around the center of Georgetown in the Very High fire hazard zone.
Power shutoffs are part of fire season too. Georgetown was named in PG&E's October 2019 Public Safety Power Shutoff plans for El Dorado County. A full tank keeps a propane fireplace or wall heater running without power, and Keep Full automatic delivery keeps it topped up.
Around the tank
- Clear brush, needles and firewood from around the tank and regulator.
- Keep the tank above about 30% from summer into fall so you have fuel on hand if the power goes out.
- If you smell gas, leave the building first, then call 911 and us at (530) 888-7438 from outside.

Volcanoville, Divide and new setups
Neighbors in Volcanoville and Divide share the same roads and the same needs. Whether you are building a cabin or buying a home with a tank, we set tanks, run underground lines and do a leak check before the first fill. Ask the seller whether an existing tank is leased or owned. Small cylinders can be filled at our Newcastle yard weekdays 8:00 to 4:30, closed noon to 1:00.
