Switching from Suburban Propane, step by step
Call or apply online
Call (530) 888-7438 or send the Open an Account form. Tell us your address, what propane runs in your home, and who owns the tank there today.
Find out who owns your tank
Your bill, your agreement or a label on the tank will tell you. If your current company leased you the tank, it belongs to them. If you bought it, it is yours.
Leased tank: we set ours
A leased tank stays the property of the company that owns it, so we set one of our tanks in a size that fits your use and your current company picks theirs up.
Owned tank: we fill it
If you own your tank, we deliver to it. We check the tank and the system before the first fill.
Leak test before the first fill
Every new customer set-up includes a pressure check and leak test of the system. The technician needs access to the home to check each appliance's shut-off valve and the piping.
Pick your delivery and payment plan
Keep Full automatic delivery or order as you go, and pay online, by autopay, card, cash or check, or on the Budget Plan beginning in May.
Suburban Propane and American River Gas
Suburban Propane is a national propane company headquartered in Whippany, New Jersey. American River Gas is a local, family-owned company that has delivered propane in the Placer foothills since 1966, from our own yard on Ophir Road in Newcastle.
If Suburban Propane leased you your tank, the tank belongs to Suburban Propane, and propane companies fill only their own tanks or tanks the customer owns. That is why switching usually means we set one of our tanks and Suburban Propane schedules the pick-up of theirs.

Questions to ask Suburban Propane before you switch
Your last bill or your Suburban Propane agreement has most of these answers.
- Who owns the tank: you, or your current company?
- Does your agreement have a notice period, a minimum-use term or a tank pick-up or removal charge?
- How much propane is in the tank now? Ask whether leftover propane in a leased tank is credited or refunded when it is picked up.
- Do you have an unpaid balance? Settle it so your current company can close the account and schedule the pick-up.

In their words
Customers who switched
“We were looking for a new propane provider and we’re so happy we decided on American River! From the first phone call with Kaitlyn in customer service to our first delivery from Daniel, we’ve had an amazing experience! Bobby came out to check our tank and check for leaks and he was the best! Both Kaitlyn and Daniel were very professional and friendly. Highly recommend this business! 🥇⭐️”
“Previous company left us high and dry, just skipped filling without notice, so on Christmas Eve Day our tank went empty. On referral I called ARG, got ahold of Steve, co-owner, who jumped in a truck and filled up our tank to literally save Christmas. Since then they've been equally awesome. In general, this is how a business should have customer service.”
“I signed up with American River a month ago at the recommendation of my brother in law. So far they have been fast, professional and very friendly. It's a breath of fresh air compared to the other company's inefficiency and rudeness I was dealing with.”
