Step by step

## How switching works

- ### Call or apply online Call (530) 888-7438 or send the Open an Account form. Tell us your address, what propane runs in your home, and who owns the tank there today.
- ### Find out who owns your tank Your bill, your agreement or a label on the tank will tell you. If your current company leased you the tank, it belongs to them. If you bought it, it is yours.
- ### Leased tank: we set ours A leased tank stays the property of the company that owns it, so we set one of our tanks in a size that fits your use and your current company picks theirs up.
- ### Owned tank: we fill it If you own your tank, we deliver to it. We check the tank and the system before the first fill.
- ### Leak test before the first fill Every new customer set-up includes a pressure check and leak test of the system. The technician needs access to the home to check each appliance's shut-off valve and the piping.
- ### Pick your delivery and payment plan Keep Full automatic delivery or order as you go, and pay online, by autopay, card, cash or check, or on the Budget Plan beginning in May.

## Before you call your current propane company

Making the switch to American River Gas can be easy! A few simple details will help us get you set up and make the transition as smooth as possible.

You can find most of the information we'll need on your most recent propane bill or service agreement. If you're not sure where to look or have questions along the way, don't worry, we're happy to help!

We're here to make switching to American River Gas simple, convenient, and stress-free.

- Who owns the tank: you, or your current company?
- Does your agreement have a notice period, a minimum-use term or a tank pick-up or removal charge?
- How much propane is in the tank now? Ask whether leftover propane in a leased tank is credited or refunded when it is picked up.
- Do you have an unpaid balance? Settle it so your current company can close the account and schedule the pick-up.

In their words

## Customers who switched

★★★★★

“We were looking for a new propane provider and we’re so happy we decided on American River! From the first phone call with Kaitlyn in customer service to our first delivery from Daniel, we’ve had an amazing experience! Bobby came out to check our tank and check for leaks and he was the best! Both Kaitlyn and Daniel were very professional and friendly. Highly recommend this business! 🥇⭐️”

Britt C. Google review, April 2026

★★★★★

“Previous company left us high and dry, just skipped filling without notice, so on Christmas Eve Day our tank went empty. On referral I called ARG, got ahold of Steve, co-owner, who jumped in a truck and filled up our tank to literally save Christmas. Since then they've been equally awesome. In general, this is how a business should have customer service.”

Frederick S. Google review, May 2025

★★★★★

“I signed up with American River a month ago at the recommendation of my brother in law. So far they have been fast, professional and very friendly. It's a breath of fresh air compared to the other company's inefficiency and rudeness I was dealing with.”

Questions

## Straight answers

### Can I switch propane companies if my tank is leased?

Yes. A leased tank belongs to the company that leased it, so we set one of our tanks and your current company picks up theirs. Check your agreement for any notice period or pick-up charge first.

### Can American River Gas fill a tank I own?

Yes. We deliver to tanks customers own. We check the tank and the system, including a leak test, before the first fill.

### Is there a leak test when I switch?

Yes. A pressure check and leak test is required for every new customer set-up, before gas is turned on.

### Do I need to be home?

Yes, for the set-up. The technician needs access to the home to check each appliance's shut-off valve and the piping.

### What happens to the propane left in my old tank?

That is between you and your current company. Ask whether leftover propane in a leased tank is credited or refunded when the tank is picked up.
