It dates to 1849, when Lisbon Applegate from Missouri bought land near Clipper Gap for a fruit ranch. The settlement was called Bear River House, then Lisbon when its post office opened in 1855, and took the Applegate name in the 1870s. It was a Central Pacific station stop. Homes here are spread along Applegate Road and the side roads off the freeway, and the Placer Hills Fire Protection District covers the community. ## Nearly all propane The Census counts 873 households in the 95703 ZIP area. 408 of them, about 47%, heat with propane, and only 22 use utility gas. The rest use other heating fuels. If you live in Applegate and cook or heat with gas, it is almost certainly propane from a tank on your property. ## Winter nights and Keep Full Applegate winters are cool and wet, with average January lows around 38 degrees, so furnaces run for months. With Keep Full, we time each delivery from outdoor temperatures and your history and fill the tank to about 86% in winter. If you would rather call it in, you can call when the gauge reads about 30% and we usually deliver within a week on the route day. Our Budget Plan can go with Keep Full: the year's propane is spread into equal monthly payments, billed on the 10th, on a May to April year, so the heavy winter months do not all land at once. - Keep the drive clear to truck width and height. - Leave the gate unlocked or give us the gate code. - Our hose reaches 120 feet from the truck. ## Tanks, lines and appliance work We set tanks by crane, leased or customer-owned, and install underground gas lines to houses, shops and outbuildings. Our technicians install regulators, do leak checks and pressure tests, and handle appliance conversions. After a tank runs empty, a leak test is required before we relight anything. Because gas meters are so rare here, many Applegate homes were built around propane from the start: furnace, water heater, range and often a fireplace insert. Tell us every appliance on the system when you open an account so we can size the tank and plan deliveries. ## Fire district and power shutoffs Applegate is covered by the Placer Hills Fire Protection District, whose Station 85 is on Applegate Road. Keep grass and brush trimmed back around the tank through fire season. Applegate was on PG&E's Placer County list for the October 23, 2019 Public Safety Power Shutoff. Keep Full automatic delivery keeps the tank topped up ahead of an outage, so a propane fireplace or wall heater that runs without power still has fuel.
